Transplantation

A transplant is a surgical procedure which consists in the replacement of an organ (heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver) or tissue (bone marrow, bones, corneas…) in a sick person (receptor) by another normal organ or tissue from a donor, who may be alive or dead.

The organ transplantation depends on the HLA compatibility of the donor, the acceptance of the risks of a major surgery, the use of immunosuppressant drugs, facing a possible rejection of the transplanted organ and overcome the potential serious complications.

In the case of people whose vital organs (such as the heart, the lungs, the liver or the bone marrow) ceased to function properly and it is impossible to recover its normal function, the organ or tissue transplantation offers an only possibility of cure.
